6.13.19 Conference Summary

This week’s conference started off with an awesome Grand Rounds with Dr. Chris Colwell, Chief/Vice Chair at UCSF/Zuckerberg and a leader in EM/EMS/trauma. Dr. Colwell shared his firsthand experiences in the Columbine and Aurora Theater shootings and discussed mass casualty, disaster management, and lessons learned. He then gave great talks on high altitude illness and trauma sedation.. Next up was our last CPC of the year with Dr. Abe Feshazion (PGY2) and Dr. Linda Katirji who presented a great case, differential, and discussion of vertebral osteomyelitis/diskitis. This was followed by a pediatric abdominal ultrasound lecture by Dr. Marina Shpilko, and then, Dr. Steve Morgan (PGY3) presented his EBM project on anaphylaxis management. Lastly, Dr. Lauren McCafferty (PGY3) and Dr. Laura Throckmorton (PGY1) presented interesting cases/images for power (half) hour.

5.9.19 Conference Summary

Conference today started with welcoming Dr. Carrie Harvey from the University of Michigan to discuss palliative care in the critically ill patient and crashing patients with valvulopathies as part of our Cleveland Rising Series. We then had Brian Lauer review opiate pharmacology. Dr. Courtney Smalley from Cleveland Clinic discussed how to establish and practice POCUS in the community and we wrapped up with Biliary Disease from Dr. Kevin Choong PGY-5 from general surgery.

1.3.19 Conference Summary

The first conference of new year started with ED Pharm 101 in which Brian Lauer, PharmD, walked us through abortive and maintenance anti-epileptic drugs. This was followed by a hepatobiliary ultrasound lecture with ultrasound fellow Dr. Jason Tehranisa, and then Dr. Ben Boswell led a talk on the uses of ultrasound for diagnosing and managing shoulder injuries. Dr. Andy Veverka challenged Dr. Chris Miller in another PGY2 clinicopathological conference with a case of PRES, and finally, Dr. Lori Shannon discussed the evidence for succinylcholine vs rocuronium for RSI.

11.29.18 Conference Summary

We started this week’s conference with morbidity and mortality conference with Dr. Lauren McCafferty. Following this, our EMS specialists Dr. Jason Zeller and Dr. Jeff Luk gave us a primer on mass casualty/disaster medicine. The day was concluded with another chief Power (Half) Hour with Dr. McCafferty.

9.27.18 Conference Summary

This week’s EM conference started off with M&M by Dr. Andrew Schaub who led great discussions on penetrating neck trauma, ischemic bowel, and pancreatitis. After this we welcomed pediatric infectious disease specialist, Dr. Amy Edwards, who walked us through the proper antibiotic choices for common infections seen in kids. This was followed by our second Super Track Series lecture in which intern Dr. Leyya Suleman-Civis discussed several nail complaints and how to manage them. The day concluded with another of the chief’s Power (Half) Hour, in which Dr. Lauren McCafferty highlighted a few more good visual diagnosis cases.

8.30.18 Conference Summary

Cleveland EM on the rise! This week’s emergency medicine conference featured 5MinSono’s co-founder Dr. Jacob Avila who discussed “Space Fights” injuries (heat, cold, and explosion related injuries!) and impressed with his mastery and teaching of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. We continued the day with a rousing M&M discussion on post-partum eclampsia, asthma exacerbation and the use of oral steroids prior to ED discharge, and the diagnostic challenge of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Finally, our department chair, Dr. Christopher Miller, continued his discussion on the importance of leadership and it’s relationship to emergency medicine via patient experience.
