4.11.19 Conference Summary

This week’s conference started off with our next CLE Rising Series speaker, Dr. David Snow, program director of Loyola’s new EM residency. Dr. Snow discussed challenges of resuscitating critically ill morbidly obese patients then talked about success in emergency medicine. We then welcomed Dr. Paria Wilson, PEM physician from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, who discussed how to approach the undifferentiated crashing pediatric patient. Next, ultrasound fellow Dr. Jason Tehranisa discussed abdominal aorta ultrasound and then led ultrasound trivia. We continued our intern tox lecture series with Dr. Yasmin Moftakhar who gave a great talk on hallucinogens. Our day concluded with Dr. WIll Jian who discussed how to manage traumatic injuries in the community.

1.17.19 Conference Summary

This week we welcomed our CLE Rising speaker, Dr. Daniel Axelson ( from Henry Ford in Detroit), who led a engaging discussion about the social determinants of health. He then gave a great talk on how to approach hyponatremia and its management. This was followed by an EM/Trauma Series lecture by our Chairman, Dr. Chris Miller, on massive hemorrhage and massive transfusion. The day concluded with another Leadership Curriculum session, led by Drs. Riley Grosso and Samia Farooqi, which focused on the different styles of communication and how these apply in our day-to-day interactions with others, particularly in the emergency department.

12.20.18 Conference Summary

This week’s conference summary started off with Morbidity and Mortality cases prepared by chief Andrew Schaub. We then had a primer on Pediatric Respiratory Distress from PEM attending Leslie Dingeldein followed by Mass Casualty, both tips and first hand experience from Trauma Surgeon Andrew Loudon who was a chief resident during the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando. Lastly we had December’s Journal Club which focused on practice changing airway literature.

9.27.18 Conference Summary

This week’s EM conference started off with M&M by Dr. Andrew Schaub who led great discussions on penetrating neck trauma, ischemic bowel, and pancreatitis. After this we welcomed pediatric infectious disease specialist, Dr. Amy Edwards, who walked us through the proper antibiotic choices for common infections seen in kids. This was followed by our second Super Track Series lecture in which intern Dr. Leyya Suleman-Civis discussed several nail complaints and how to manage them. The day concluded with another of the chief’s Power (Half) Hour, in which Dr. Lauren McCafferty highlighted a few more good visual diagnosis cases.

9.6.18 Conference Summary

This week we continued our ED Pharmacy series with our own Christy McKenzie, PharmD giving us the latest on ACLS drugs. Next we kicked off our intern toxicology lecture series with PGY-1 Zean Chen;s lecture on Beta Blocker and Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose. Ultrasound Fellow, Jessica Rockwood helped us navigate IUPs and ruling out ectopics with First Trimester POCUS. We talked trauma with Riley Grosso and Matthew Stull and how to approach the airway in significant facial injuries. Riley Grosso then has us thinking fast and slow with Meta Cognition. Finally, our chief Andrew Schaub took us through another Power (half) Hour with great visuals from our very own department.

Another spectacular day of topics at University Hospitals emergency medicine residency program including wellness and time management, our first clinicopathologic conference, another addition to our growing collaborative series between the departments of trauma surgery and emergency medicine, pediatric pain management, advanced EKG interpretation, and finally the management of vaginal bleeding in the emergency department.
