Interviewing at Our Program

For the 23-24 application cycle, we plan to extend an initial round of interview invitations by October 13th. We have nearly two dozen faculty working non-stop to review applications for the preceding weeks to determine the applicants who best fit our program’s growth-oriented mantra. Our team continually reviews applications on a rolling basis and will constantly be offering open interview slots throughout the interview season. If you have updates to your application after we start offering interviews, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team to let us know. We recognize the process is not perfect, but some of the residents who we have been most proud to train have been offered interviews very late in the season!

We only offer interviews to the number of applicants we have slots to interview. Interview scheduling is on a first come-first serve basis via the ERAS scheduling platform. We request you respond to our interview request within 3 days of offer. At times later in the interview season, we may have to ask for a tighter turnaround for scheduling interviews, but will call you if we must ask for a tighter timeframe. If you need to cancel your interview, we ask you for at least 7 days noticeto allow ample time to offer the spot to another applicant.

For the 23-24 application cycle we will continue to follow best practices recommended by CORD & COPA to conduct all our interviews virtually. In advance of the interview, we will share some information about the program to familiarize you with us. We highly encourage you to review our website as we work hard to make it a useful resource throughout this process. Our program hosts an in-person happy hour for our residents and applicants the first week of the month, if you happen to be around Cleveland we welcome you to attend but this is not at all expected. We also offer virtual meet & greets with the residents throughout the interview season to get to know our team better. While the virtual session is optional, it is highly encouraged as meeting our residents will give you the best sense of our program’s culture. We have found that attendance at our social events tends to be one of the most valuable aspects for applicants during the interview process.

During your interview day we will spend some time introducing you to our program’s mission and structure. We also feel it’s important to teach you something during the day to show you what the training experience is like if you decide to make Cleveland your future home. We believe the best way to grow residents is through engagement, so this session requires some back and forth between you and our faculty. This session is NOT meant to be an assessment tool for our team and is truly provided for you to gage if our program’s teaching philosophy aligns with your needs as a learner and potential future resident.

On interview day, each applicant will have 4 meetings, which include:

1.    One-on-one interview with a resident

2.    One-on-one interview with a faculty member

3.    One-on-one interview with our Program Director

4.    Two-on-one interview with two of our faculty members

We plan to organize some opportunities for optional in-person and virtual Second Look to introduce you to all the great things Cleveland and UH has to offer while getting a bit more of a chance to interact with our team. We will provide more information as these dates get closer.
