Division of Prehospital & Disaster Medicine Overview

 The Division of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center provides medical command and oversight to several local fire departments and prehospital agencies; the UH Ground Critical Care Transport Team; and UH Air Med, its air medical service in partnership with PHI Air Medical.  

The Division also works in partnership with the University Hospitals EMS Training and Disaster Preparedness Institute, which provides medical command, oversight, and education to approximately 200 prehospital agencies and fire departments in northeast Ohio. In addition, the UHCMC ED shares on-line medical command responsibilities for Cleveland EMS.

The Division is involved in disaster medicine and emergency management through active participation in UHCMC’s Emergency Management Committee as well as the UH System Disaster Committee.

Mass gathering/event medicine is also a focus of the Division by providing medical support and staff for several events throughout the year, including the Cleveland Marathon, the Cleveland Triathlon, and all events at First Energy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns.

The Division is responsible for EMS and disaster medicine education for the Department’s Emergency Medicine Residency as well as its own ACGME-Accredited EMS Fellowship. The Division also offers an EMS & Critical Care Transport Elective for 4th year medical students.
