This week we welcomed CLE Rising speaker, Dr. Enyo Ablordeppey, EM/Intensivist and ultrasound extraordinaire from WashU, who gave walked us through her “Top 10 Ways I Use US Everyday” followed by a talk on point-of-care ultrasound and the role of implementation research. This was followed by another ED Pharm 101 session with ED pharmacist Christy McKenzie, PharmD, who went over pharmacologic management of atrial fibrillation. Dr. Matt Stull then led Airway Grand Rounds with a discussion on the 7 Ps of RSI.

We started this week with last month’s morbidity and mortality cases followed by our EBM series which featured Pediatric Fevers. Pediatric orthopedist Christina Hardesty joined us for “Pediatric Ortho for the EM Physician.” Finally we discussed Direct Xa Inhibitor Reversals with Jessica Traeger, PharmD which was the perfect segue into our “When the Bleeding Doesn’t Stop” journal club for this month.

We also continued our intern lecture series about super track complaints with an overview of all things UTI. Our very own sports medicine trained Ben Boswell then went through the highlights of MSK trauma.

This week’s EM conference started off with M&M by Dr. Andrew Schaub who led great discussions on penetrating neck trauma, ischemic bowel, and pancreatitis. After this we welcomed pediatric infectious disease specialist, Dr. Amy Edwards, who walked us through the proper antibiotic choices for common infections seen in kids. This was followed by our second Super Track Series lecture in which intern Dr. Leyya Suleman-Civis discussed several nail complaints and how to manage them. The day concluded with another of the chief’s Power (Half) Hour, in which Dr. Lauren McCafferty highlighted a few more good visual diagnosis cases.

9.13.18 Conference Summary

This week we welcomed Grand Rounds speaker, Dr. Steven Curry, an EM/Toxicologist from Banner Medical Center/University of Arizona-Phoenix, who led a great discussion of how to recognize and manage snake bites and nerve gas poisoning. Next, we kicked off our EBM lecture series with PGY3 James Palmer who walked us through appropriate management and disposition for patients presenting with cellulitis. We also started our ‘Community EM Series’ with PGY3 Arlene Losloso’s lecture on pediatric concussion, followed by our first ‘Super Track Series’ lecture with PGY1 Jordan Hitchens’ discussion on how to approach the complaint of sore throat. Finally, for our September Consultant-of-the-Month, we welcomed Dr. Keith Armitage, an Infectious Disease specialist, who led a discussion on appropriate use/selection of antibiotics, particularly as it pertains to our hospital.

This week we continued our ED Pharmacy series with our own Christy McKenzie, PharmD giving us the latest on ACLS drugs. Next we kicked off our intern toxicology lecture series with PGY-1 Zean Chen;s lecture on Beta Blocker and Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose. Ultrasound Fellow, Jessica Rockwood helped us navigate IUPs and ruling out ectopics with First Trimester POCUS. We talked trauma with Riley Grosso and Matthew Stull and how to approach the airway in significant facial injuries. Riley Grosso then has us thinking fast and slow with Meta Cognition. Finally, our chief Andrew Schaub took us through another Power (half) Hour with great visuals from our very own department.

8.30.18 Conference Summary

Cleveland EM on the rise! This week’s emergency medicine conference featured 5MinSono’s co-founder Dr. Jacob Avila who discussed “Space Fights” injuries (heat, cold, and explosion related injuries!) and impressed with his mastery and teaching of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. We continued the day with a rousing M&M discussion on post-partum eclampsia, asthma exacerbation and the use of oral steroids prior to ED discharge, and the diagnostic challenge of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Finally, our department chair, Dr. Christopher Miller, continued his discussion on the importance of leadership and it’s relationship to emergency medicine via patient experience. This week’s conference started off with our first M&M of the year— complete with a brand new M&M format— by Dr. McCafferty. She discusses Adrenal Crisis, NIPPV in PNA (or not…), and how to determine what type of transport you might need for a patient you are sending to another hospital. Dr. Shpilko lead us through cardiac US, the chief’s power (half) hour was packed with good visual diagnosis cases, and Dr. Grosso rounded out the day with another lecture in our pediatric curriculum, this time focusing on HEENT.

Our third conference of the new year brought Dr. Jennifer Mitzman, a former UH CMC EM graduate, from OSU and Nationwide Children’s Hospital to talk about both foreign body and other ingestions as well as second victim syndrome. We also had our first trauma and EM co-conference - pneumothorax management. Dr Sean Abraham finished off the conference day with cardiac and non-cardiac chest pain.

This week we started with some the latest in post-ROSC care from one of own EM intensivists Dr. Matt Stull. We also had a primer on common neonatal presentations from Dr. Chris Peluso (current EM PGY-2 and Meds-Peds graduate) and the latest UH CMC ED Pharmacy updates and tips from PharmD Brian Lauer. One of our ultrasound fellows, Dr. Jessica Rockwood taught us the basics of the always useful FAST and E-FAST exams and we finished with our Consultant of the Month for July: ENT and their approach to epistaxis.
